Director's Message September 2008 Because yesterday's evening prayer at Mercy Auburn was so lovely, may I share with everyone, just a bit of the Mercy Day Prayer that we prayed in anticipation of Mercy Day celebration on September 24? I believe these are who we are as people of God and people of Mercy. A small bit of history: On September 24, 1827, the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, Anna Marie Doyle and Catherine Byrn took up residence on Baggot Street in Dublin. This began a home for many girls and women in need. Later, permission was given to name the residence The House of Our Lady of Mercy which was shortened to The House of Mercy. "The seed of mercy planted on that day, continues to grow and flourish bringing healing, comfort, and life to the poor, the sick and uneducated throughout the world. For the gift of mercy shared freely with all, we give thanks and praise to our God." Prayers of Intercession: * The House of Mercy was established to serve the needs of the poor, the sick and uneducated: ~ May we freely respond to God's call to serve the needy of our time. * Catherine McAuley was assisted in her ministry by many who were animated by her vision of service: ~ By collaborating with others in the works of mercy, may we learn from them how to be more merciful. * Like Catherine, we have established institutions to address our enduring concerns: ~ Through our sponsored works, may we model mercy and justice and promote systemic change according to these ideals. * Those who came to the House of Mercy experience respect and hospitality: ~ May we witness to mercy by reverencing the dignity of each person and creating a spirit of gracious welcome wherever we live and serve. After this, a song and then we gathered in McAuley Hall for a great evening meal. See you all soon.
